Captain Marvel
A New Look at a new origin story
This movie has been anticipated by many Marvel fans as it will give the marvel fans there true female superhero. This movie is set in the ’90s and the way I felt is that many people had high expectation from this movie but they didn’t enjoy the movie as they hoped.
The movie overall is a very nice movie which has a lot of action and the scene that was set in the movie was also great. The way the actress Brie Larson carried the role was nice and how Brie Larson would seem an unlikely choice to play her — known best for her Oscar-winning performance as a mother held captive in Room — she brings to the role a welcome mix of innocence and resolves, vulnerability and determination.
Larson also shares lovely chemistry with Jackson, playing a young Agent Fury with some digital help. This is the longest role for Fury in all the Avengers films so far, and Captain Marvel uses him well to both give him and Captain Marvel an engaging origin story.
This movie is set in the mid 90’s so Nick Fury isn’t quite the guy we have come to know yet. Bottom line...if you are a fan of Marvel/comic book movies. If you are a fan of the MCU and it’s ever expanding universe this movie is a must.
Larson was every bit as awesome as she could've been, although maybe a little overpowered and Mary-Sue like at times, but that didn't bother me. Brie Larson does a fantastic job here, her Carol being an arrogant pilot full of nuance (and at times an okay Robert Downey Jr. impersonation) who can kick so much but no matter the gender and it's awesome.
The supporting cast is AMAZING, with the highlights being Sam L. Jackson, Lashawna Lynch, Ben Mendelsohn, and Goose (the cat). The scenes with the Skrulls are everything I hoped they would be and more and Secret Invasion really could deliver something special in the MCU if Feige ever decides to go that route.
Captain Marvel is jam-packed with action and humor but it never feels forced and it doesn't stop it from including a lot of genuinely touching moments.
People who haven't seen the other MCU movies or read any of the comics needn't worry, there were plenty of subtle references, cameos, and easter eggs included but there was no prior viewing or reading required.
With most of the film taking place on what seems like one long day and a tight runtime of 124 minutes, Captain Marvel does deliver an enjoyable time at the movies, one that functions well enough for her entry into the larger world. (Avengers: Endgame is out in seven weeks.) But in an over-crowded universe — Marvel's might be getting a little lighter but there's no shortage of superhero stories, in general — the film needed to do a lot more to be anywhere near as powerful as its heroine.
Unfortunately, Captain Marvel is held back in the same way so many origin stories are. Having to introduce new races to the MCU and explain how a hero gets their powers is always going to take up valuable screen time. Carol's life before her powers is a fascinating one and I was left wanting to see more. But this is a superhero movie after all and so the focus will always have to be on that aspect of her life.
As it is, Captain Marvel is more a reminder of Marvel's early work (think the first Captain America or Thor) than its more recent output (Black Panther or Infinity War). It's no match for Wonder Woman, and that's a shame because Captain Marvel deserves better.
Overall the movie is incredibly fun to watch. Perfectly cast, with amazing effects and a plot that impressively manages to be both familiar and unpredictable.
